Online security and the social web
By Dominic Campbell • May 13th, 2008 • Category: EventsThrough the wonders of Twitter, I was recently asked by Emma Wallace of Social8 to talk to a joint meeting of Intellect’s Security and Privacy Group and Young Professionals’ Network on “Security and the Future Generation”.
Not the most inspiring of titles granted, but the presentations from the front by myself and Ray Stanton (Global Head of Business Continuity, Security and Governance Practice at BT) were followed by a really useful debate, with the combined membership of both committees working really well in a format that I’d recommend Intellect explore again across their other professional groups.
As I pointed to in my presentation, the social web is still young and we are all still on a steep learning curve when it comes to the implications of declarative living. Both gen y and those generations before it can only benefit from opening up the debate, working together to better understand and harness the benefits of online networking and increased transparency in a business context on the one hand and highlight and help mitigate the risks and pitfalls on the other.
As the debate itself highlighted, one thing is for sure - the social web is here to stay and burying our heads in the sand on this stuff just isn’t an option.

Thank you :-). I hope you enjoyed it. I’m only sorry I couldn’t be there to join in the fun and games.
