Wish list wrap up part one: speakers corner
By Dominic Campbell • Dec 29th, 2008 • Category: FeaturesIt’s amazing what can happen when you bring a bunch of interesting people together in a room around a subject they are all personally and passionately committed to. Well that’s just what I tried a couple of Mondays ago with the generous support of Rohan Gunatillake and the people at NESTA Connect – and it certainly didn’t disappoint!
The premise of the session was a chance meeting I’d had with Derek Wyatt MP back in October, leading me to micro-blogging for ideas of things I should be chatting to Derek about which I later pulled together in a fuller blog post such was the response to my tweet. I was inundated with responses relating to what people felt the government should be doing to ensure Britain (and the government itself) continues to take full advantage of the benefits of the web, giving rise to the idea that we should gather together a slightly different and diverse crowd of people who have an interest in this agenda and would have plenty to say to Derek. And boy did they…
The speakers
I was up first to kick things off with a little icebreaker, explaining the meandering journey that led me to put on the session and giving one tiny personal example of the power of the web :

Next up we heard from the three main speakers on the bill on a range of topics. Derek Wyatt MP and Tom Hamilton (Regional Manager East Midlands, BT) both presented with a slant towards the digital inclusion agenda (although not exclusively), with Lee Bryant (MD at Headshift ) giving a wider view on the social benefits of the web and what he’d ask santa for this Christmas if he ran the government (oh the mental image of santa at the head of the Cabinet table surrounded by his little helpers…).
So here’s what they had to say:

Commentary
This post is part one of the report back on the event so make sure you keep an eye out for part two which will include footage of some of the passionate responses of the audience as well as my take on proceedings and ideas on where we go from here.
And if you just can’t wait for that, here’s what some of the others thought about the get together:
- “It’s not about the technology “, Rohan Gunatillake of NESTA
- “What do you want from government and the Internet? “, Ivo Gormley of ThinkPublic and Us Now
- “FutureGov Wish List “, Jon Lister of Osmosoft
